Chapter Five

Unleash Your True Selves

The sand shimmered in the bright sunlight, waves of heat radiating from the deserts of Karinam. On the horizon the village of Valdell flickered into view like a mirage. The army of demons drew closer to the settlement. They were led by Anathema, who strode confidently ahead of his soldiers, a wry smile etched upon his sharp features. It had been six weeks since Anathema had attacked Eresteid. His nerves still tingled at the memory of smashing their soldiers aside, of bursting into his true form and unleashing pandemonium upon Nightfall: claws raking through young flesh, his minions pounding their clubs against the humans' fragile bodies, and the sound of screams. His body shuddered with pleasure.

Scorching rays of sun beat down upon his skin, and his sandy brown hair was swept across his face, his eyes piercing and focused.

Anathema's heart pounded with the adrenaline of an impending attack. He licked his lips in anticipation of the blood, the screams and the destruction. This was what he had been waiting for. All the extra training, the planning, the restricting himself into this uncomfortable body had finally been worth it. Now it was time to reap the rewards.

They approached the border of the town. It was small and quiet, merely a few wooden huts and the bar where he and Chaos had come to drink draka. Vincent had given him the freedom to do as he wished with this village: keep the people alive as slaves or massacre them all. It made no difference to Vincent, and he ordered Anathema to do as he thought best.

Anathema had considered keeping the villagers alive, but now he thought of Chaos and the times they had spent together here, something dark and strange began to murmur deep inside of him. The memories started to creep in. The training, the drinks…He pushed the memories aside, and drew strength from the anger and resentment within him.

The fact that he had spent happy times here with Chaos wouldn't stop him from burning the village to the ground. If anything, it would just make his victory even sweeter. When Chaos heard of the destruction of Valdell, he would know it was Anathema who did it, and he would shudder in horror and fear. Anathema grinned to himself, relishing the thought of sweet, naive Chaos being made to suffer.

Through their interactions, and the fondness Chaos believed they shared, Anathema had been able to use Chaos's affections against him. The child had been totally unable to deal with a proper combat situation. Like a scared kitten, he had become paralysed with shock and awe, useless in the face of true power.

The memory made him grin again, but there was something else underneath his sadistic pleasure. Prickling irritation was eating away at him, and he couldn't understand the reason why. Even though Anathema had stood before Chaos and easily crushed his army, he hadn't had the chance to kill him. Maybe it was that missed opportunity that ate away at him.
